”കോളേജ് പഠനം കഴിഞ്ഞു ജോലിയില്‍ കയറാനായി തയാറെടുക്കവേയാണ് റേച്ചലിന്റെയും കാമുകന്‍ റെന്‍വിന്റെയും ജീവിതത്തില്‍ ആ ദുരന്ത ദിനം വരുന്നത്. അണ്ഡാശയത്തിന് പുറത്ത് ട്യൂമറായാണ് ഇവരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് ആദ്യ പ്രതിസന്ധി എത്തിയത്. ട്യൂമർ നീക്കം ചെയ്യണമെന്ന് ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ അറിയിച്ചു. തുടർന്ന് ഡോക്ടർ പറഞ്ഞ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ഏതൊരാളെയും തകര്‍ക്കുന്നതായിരുന്നു. നിങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കുട്ടികള്‍ വേണമെന്നുണ്ടോ? എന്നായിരുന്നു ഡോക്ടറുടെ ചോദ്യം. ഇവളുടെ ആരോഗ്യം നശിച്ചിട്ട് കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെയും കൊണ്ട് ഞാനെന്ത് ചെയ്യാനാ എന്നായിരുന്നു കാമുകൻ റെന്‍വിന്റെ മറുപടി.
സര്‍ജറിക്കു മുമ്പും ചിരിയോടെ പോകണമെന്ന് റെന്‍വിന്റെ വാക്കുകള്‍ റേച്ചല്‍ ഇപ്പോഴും ഓര്‍മ്മിക്കുന്നു. സര്‍ജറി കഴിഞ്ഞ് സാധാരണ ജീവിതത്തിലേക്ക് തിരികെ വരുമ്പോഴാണ് ക്യാന്‍സറാണെന്ന് തിരിച്ചറിയുന്നത്. ആ സമയം റെന്‍വിന്‍ വിദേശത്തായിരുന്നു. പിന്നെ കീമോയും തുടർ ചികിത്സകളും, കീമോയ്ക്ക് ഇടയില്‍ മുടി നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട തനിക്ക് മുടി മുഴുവന്‍ വടിച്ച് റെന്‍വിനും താങ്ങായ് നിന്നു-റേച്ചൽ പറയുന്നു. നിന്റെ ഓരോ ചുവടുകളിലും ഞാന്‍ കൂടെ ഉണ്ടെന്നായിരുന്നു റെന്‍വിന്റെ മറുപടി.. അഞ്ചു മാസങ്ങള്‍ക്കു ശേഷം കാന്‍സര്‍ പൂര്‍ണമായി മാറി. എങ്കിലും പഴയ ആരോഗ്യം ഇതുവരെ വീണ്ടെടുത്തിട്ടില്ലെന്ന് റേച്ചല്‍ പറയുന്നു. പക്ഷെ തനിക്ക് ഒന്നറിയാം റെന്‍വിന്‍ തനിക്കൊപ്പം ഉണ്ടാകുമെന്ന്… എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാണ് കുറിപ്പ് അവസാനിക്കുന്നത്.
റേച്ചലിന്റെ കുറിപ്പ്:
I was just out of college and excited to work, when my health went for a toss. Suddenly I began throwing up and fell so sick, I couldn’t even get out of bed.
The doctor said I had a tumor around my ovaries and they might have to be removed. She asked me, ‘Do you want kids?’ So Renvin my boyfriend goes like, ‘What will I do with the kids if she’s not well? Keep them in the cupboard?’
I knew it was his lame attempt to make me laugh, but it worked. And right before the surgery, he asked me to flash my biggest smile.
The surgery went well and I was looking forward to going back to normal life, when I got the biggest blow– I had cancer. I broke down. At 21, you don’t expect to hear that– ever.
Renvin was abroad for work and kept shuttling a lot. So when I called to tell him, he just said, ‘Rach. Who’s the winner?’ And like a little kid I told him, ‘I am!!’ And I felt better again.
My chemo began shortly after– it hurt like hell. My sessions were 5 days straight and the dosage was high. Every part of my body hurt, I couldn’t eat much and was in bed all day. The effects started right after the first session.
One morning, I was combing my hair and an entire lock fell into my hand. I was scared seeing that much hair! So I asked my salon aunty to come home and chop it all off. Oddly enough, after she did, I felt so strong; I felt like I could do anything!
That evening, when Renvin came home and saw me, he just said, ‘I’ll be back with groceries.’ Instead, he returned with a shaved head and said, ‘I’m with you every step of the way!’ I was so touched, I hugged him and cried.
Over time, I started recovering– on days when I didn’t have chemo, I was doing an online MBA or chilling with my friends. The environment was so positive that if there was ever a low moment, someone was right there to pick me up. Even when I had to undergo blood transfusion, I wasn’t as scared because everyone just kept me going.
5 months later, the doctors declared I was cancer-free! When I told Renvin, he celebrated with his colleagues at work and shouted, ‘Who’s the winner Rach?’ And I happily said, ‘I am!’
Few months in, I still wasn’t allowed to go out much. But when Bryan Adams came for his concert tour, Renvin took me with every precaution. When my favorite song came on, he got down on one knee and asked, ‘Will you marry me?’ My answer was a resounding, ‘YES!’ I don’t even have the words to tell you how I felt. I remember, my heart was beating so fast, but there was no uncertainty– I always knew he’s the one for me, for better or for bald!”
